Book 5 of 39 in the Old Testament — Covenant renewal.
Deuteronomy consists of Moses' final speeches to Israel on the plains of Moab, delivered just before his death and their entry into Canaan. He recounts their wilderness journey, restates the law given at Sinai for a generation that hadn't been there, and urges wholehearted love and obedience toward God. The book famously calls Israel to ‘love the Lord your God with all your heart,’ and closes with blessings for faithfulness and warnings for rebellion. Moses dies within sight of the land he led Israel toward but never entered.
“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.”King James Version
The Shema: “Hear, O Israel... love the Lord your God with all your heart.”
“And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.”King James Version
People do not live by bread alone but by every word from God's mouth, later quoted by Jesus.
“I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:”King James Version
Moses sets before Israel the choice between life and death, blessing and curse.
“Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.”King James Version
Moses tells Israel to be strong and courageous because God goes with them.
“And there arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face,”King James Version
No prophet like Moses, who knew God face to face, ever arose again in Israel.
