Book 15 of 39 in the Old Testament — Return & rebuilding the temple.
Ezra opens where 2 Chronicles leaves off, as King Cyrus of Persia allows the Jewish exiles to return home and rebuild the temple in Jerusalem. The first wave of returnees, led by Zerubbabel, faces opposition but eventually completes the temple. Decades later, the priest and scribe Ezra leads a second group back, focused on restoring proper worship and covenant faithfulness among a people who had drifted into compromise. The book pairs physical rebuilding with spiritual renewal.
“Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, The LORD God of heaven hath given me all the kingdoms of the earth; and he hath charged me to build him an house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Who is there among you of all his people? his God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and build the house of the LORD God of Israel, (he is the God,) which is in Jerusalem.”King James Version
Cyrus proclaims that the Lord has charged him to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem.
“And they sang together by course in praising and giving thanks unto the LORD; because he is good, for his mercy endureth for ever toward Israel. And all the people shouted with a great shout, when they praised the LORD, because the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid.”King James Version
The people shout for joy as the temple's foundation is laid.
“For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the LORD, and to do it, and to teach in Israel statutes and judgments.”King James Version
Ezra devotes himself to studying, obeying, and teaching God's Law.
“And said, O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to thee, my God: for our iniquities are increased over our head, and our trespass is grown up unto the heavens.”King James Version
Ezra confesses shame over the people's unfaithfulness after returning from exile.
“Now therefore make confession unto the LORD God of your fathers, and do his pleasure: and separate yourselves from the people of the land, and from the strange wives.”King James Version
Ezra calls the people to confess and separate from their compromises.
