Book 13 of 39 in the Old Testament — Israel's history retold.
1 Chronicles retells Israel's story from a priestly, worship-centered perspective, opening with extensive genealogies tracing humanity from Adam down to the returned exiles. The narrative proper focuses almost entirely on David's reign, especially his preparations for the temple that his son Solomon would build. Written after the exile for a rebuilding community, it emphasizes God's enduring covenant with David's line and the centrality of proper worship. Much material overlaps with Samuel and Kings but with a different emphasis.
“O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever.”King James Version
David calls Israel to give thanks to the Lord, for his steadfast love endures forever.
“And now, LORD, thou art God, and hast promised this goodness unto thy servant: Now therefore let it please thee to bless the house of thy servant, that it may be before thee for ever: for thou blessest, O LORD, and it shall be blessed for ever.”King James Version
God's promise to bless David's house forever.
“And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let me fall now into the hand of the LORD; for very great are his mercies: but let me not fall into the hand of man.”King James Version
David chooses to fall into the hands of the Lord, whose mercy is great.
“And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the LORD searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever.”King James Version
David urges Solomon to serve God with a whole heart and willing mind.
“Thine, O LORD, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art exalted as head above all.”King James Version
David praises God's greatness, power, and glory over all things.
