Book 19 of 27 in the New Testament — Christ's superiority.
Hebrews, whose author remains debated, argues at length that Jesus is superior to every institution of the old covenant — greater than the angels, than Moses, than the Levitical priesthood, and than the repeated animal sacrifices of the temple. Addressed to believers tempted to drift back toward their former Jewish religious practices under pressure, it presents Jesus as the great high priest whose single sacrifice accomplished what the old system never could. Interspersed with the theology are urgent warnings against giving up and famous exhortations to persevere in faith. Its sweeping argument makes it one of the New Testament's richest theological books.
“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”King James Version
God's word is described as living, active, and sharper than any two-edged sword.
“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”King James Version
Believers are invited to approach God's throne of grace with confidence.
“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”King James Version
Faith is described as confidence in what we hope for, assurance about what we don't see.
“Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”King James Version
Believers are urged to run their race fixing their eyes on Jesus.
“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.”King James Version
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
